How To Install Carpet

Sometimes, accidents happen like stepping in paint and then walking all over your carpet. But whether your flooring was ruined by accident or it's just time for an upgrade, carpet is not as daunting of a task to replace as you might think. Especially if you are using a carpet with an attached pad.

Installing an attached pad carpet takes way less time and it's easier than installing woven back, because you don't have to attach the pad separately and there's no stretching. So the first thing you need to do is decide what style of carpet you want to install. And then measure your room. If you have any questions on the different styles of carpet that are available, talk with your local carpet retailer.

Carpet typically comes on rolls that are 12ft wide. But if your room is wider than 12 ft., then your carpet is going to need to be seamed. Let's pretend that the room that we are working on is 16 by 11, so we don't have to worry about any seams. We'll just buy 16 and a half feet of carpet off of the 12 foot roll and that should cover the entire floor with extra carpet on all sides and that's important to remember. You want to have at least a few inches of extra carpet on each side unless you have a wall that doesn't have any projections or thresholds that you can just butt the carpet up against.

Before, we can install the new carpet, we have to remove the old stuff and prepare the floor surface for install. We'll do that by removing the tack strips, getting rid of the old carpet pad and taking out any nails or staples sticking out of the floor. Then we'll sweep and vacuum the area, so it's clear of any debris.

With the floor surface cleaned and ready, start placing double-sided carpet tape around the perimeter of the room and then we'll place 12 by 12 inch crosses at four foot intervals along the middle of the room.

For the meantime, leave the protective covering on the top side of the tape. Next bring the carpet in and position it in the room's that is either centered or butted up against one wall. With a few inches of excess carpet along the other walls. Once the carpet is positioned, fold half of the carpet back over itself

Then peel the protective covering off the tape and replace the carpet smoothing it out from the center of the room towards the walls. Then do the same thing for the other half.

Now we're ready to trim off the excess carpet using specialty tools. For this we 're going to use a hook bill knife and a carpet wall trimmer. We'll use the hook bill knife to crease the carpet down into the floor and wall corners so it fits tightly. Then we'll use the carpet wall trimmer to trim the carpet flushed to the wall. To finish up, walk along the perimeter of your carpet to fasten it to the carpet tape.

And that's it. It really is easy and by doing it yourself, you'll know that it was done right and you'll even save yourself some money.
